Grrrrr Turrrrr…

~or “mittens plugs his wittle ears…”

I rarely ever comment … hell I rarely ever READ anything on The Mittani much less comment on the blatant Null-Coalitions-are GOOD-for-You-and-Are-the-End-Game-of-EVE-centric writing there... I am not a fan of the Coalitions or Goonswarm or even das mittens himself himself as anyone who reads me knows or even of Nullsuck as I calls it…

Actually, I should not say that I hate nullsec… ‘cause that is not true, I hate the nullsec that the CFC and other coalitions have created. I actually would love to fly the skies of a free and interesting for all nullsec… but that is not what we have today… no, we have the Big Blue Doughnut. A name so indicative of the actual conditions there that nullseccers themselves use it.

Anyhoo, I do peruse the site fom time to time and I was reading The Jump Changes: Average Time To Fun, by FearlessLittleToaster, a bit of a rantfest against the Jump Drive Changes coming in Phoebe. And I was stirred to add my .2 ISK when this happened…

I have been blocked by The Mittani. I am shocked. Not that they can do it, a blog is not a Journalistic New Source no matter what lies they tell you… it’s supposed to be a personal web log… though The Mittani site does act and try to look like a Respectable Upstanding News Magazine more than just a mouthpiece blog for mittens. I find it interesting when, in the “About” on The Mittani ‘they’ say…

“We hope to provide as balanced a view as possible, so that those on all sides of Eve’s conflicts can come here for information, even if they sometimes disagree with the analysis of one writer or another.”
Except when we ‘really’ disagree with you, then we don’t allow you to talk at our table. Once you censor anyone’s voice, well, so much for any pretenses about ‘Balance’.

Also, I found this of note…
“…there are places you can go to find out about Eve.  But the ones with intelligent commentary tend to be forums, and those tend to be daunting for the non-member…”

The forums FFS?! Makes you wonder a bit about the quality and actual intelligence of the unnamed ‘they’ who wrote that… I mean ANYONE who has spent five minutes in the forums knows they are 80% trolls, 15% wannabe trolls with mebbe 5% actually worth reading… IE good luck.

No it’s not that they could block me (itsa blog), or even that they would block me (the light of open discussion oft discloses that which lurks in the dark places)... it’s that someone, someone at The Mittani itself itself, took enough umbrage at my writing to actually do so.

Now I know I am not the only one, but it sorta feels good knowing they noticed… you know?  But… well, oh looky here, I seem to have my own blog… so my comments got posted anyway…   =P

Always remember, “If they’re shooting at you, you must be doing something right.”

♫ Home is Where I Wanna Beeee eee… ♪

~or “Keep The Customer Satisfied…”  =]

(Please hold Ctrl and click to open the link above in a new tab or it will it take you off this page… it seems Blogger has issues with audio links, or I just suck at bloggin, either is quite possible… anyhoo…)

I’m home…

On the last day of my 14 day trial on TurAdan I caught up with some of my, TurAmarths, corpmates. We got on TS3 and talked about this and that and… well, one of my guys offered to PLEX me back in… Now for a lot of people in this game this is not a huge deal… but for us, a small corp making our way on our own in Anoikis, it’s not really ‘easy’ to throw around PLEX like some of our nullbretheren… so his kind offer was greatly appreciated, and followed by, “Uh, you ARE gonna pay me back… Tur.”  LOL

So… I logged off TurAdan and for the first time in MONTHS I logged on as… me. And Sov says… “Sites?” HOOOLEEE SHIT YES!!!!! Then I realized my screen layout was all fubared from, well, I dunno from why but it was so that took some time to straighten out, then it was find my Scimmy time… uh, who renamed all the POS mods? And then, Oh, wait my OV is totally wrong… and whereinbluebazes are my OV sets? ‘nother few minutes pass and now Edny is riding my ass… (ok so Endy is ALWAYS riding someone’s ass but I JUST got back ingame man!! give a brother a break! Which, of course, simply increases the ass-riding…) finally I say I’m ready… I’m not but what the hell huh? Can’t be all that hard to remember the old reflexes right… ? right? Uh... right?

Then we land in the first site and I’m all… “Uh, guys… so, how do you play this game again?” and I’m the sole logi pilot… Now THIS outta be fun!   LOL

Actually, it all went well. I eventually slid right back into the old routine... land, engage all defense mods, orbit central ship at 30km, lock everyone up (with a 3-man, I keep one repper on each and use the 4th as needed...), launch droans, lock the Sleeper BSes as they spawn and get in range, sick droans on BSes and keep everyone alive and healthy without anyone needing to request reps... if yer practiced and on yer toes.

We ran the first 5 of the 15 sites in the hole, took a break and as Sov did the Scoop n Loot on the MTUs, I reshipped and followed in the Noctis doing the Land and Pwnsalvage EVERYTHING thing... like a boss. As I was finishing #5 RL interrupted and I hadda go AFK 4 5 as twere..which of course means AFK for five minutes... and I ended up being AFK for like 5 HOURS... sheesh.

Anyhoo, finally logged back in and I was alone... which is ok as we are wormholers... we dunt really like crowds, crowded rooms or crowded star systems that much either. So I thought, "Wait I has PI!" So I went to do PI and discovered once again, that I suck at EVE. I had to warp from planet to planet looking for my PI setups so I could figure out what the hell I was doing back 6 months ago...

Finally I got it all figured out and got my ores extracting, my prod lines untangled and running and my 2 final products, Robotics for corp, and Supercomputers for sale restarted. Then I sat back, thinking about the future...

After so many months of semi-stagnation... patches that seemed, well lack-luster at best, the very real stagnation of the The Big Blue Doughnut in Nullsec... the changes at CCP, personnel shuffling, no moar BIG Expansions twice a year, now a fast, mebbe too fast, six week cycle of constant changes... small to large.

I myself have found something personal I do not like about this changes in particular. I actually started doing computer graphic by making screen wallpapers... and I have loved that CCP always did a great set of new wallpapers for each expansion... well, no more. With the fast paced and oft not exactly what you would call 'theme' focused new Patchspansions... a themed wallpaper is simply not easy to do. And CCP seems to have just dropped the idea of wallpapers pretty much altogether... and while its a very little thing I grant you, but I miss it.

But, on the third hand we have so damned much to look forward to... With Phoebe hitting in Early Nov with... Jump Drive changes, which will 'Change the Face of Nullsec...' Eternal Skill Queueing (ZOMG!)... BOOKMARKS IN SPAAAAAACE... Multiple Sell Orders... Capitols using Jump Gates... Doomsdays in Lowsec... the list goes on and on and on.

And my beloved Anoikis has gotten and is getting some more of the love... moar Newbula... moar new wormhole graphics (OMG the beauty!) and the Research Race of YC 116, wherein we, and scum sucking outsiders, will fight to harvest and then give away (FFS!!) some of the very valuable Sleeper Blue Loot (Neural Network Analyzers & Sleeper Data Libraries) as we vie to see who will get access first to the New Technology that is the prize at the end of the race...

Well, by now it was pretty late so I warped to a POS pounce cloaked and hit Ctrl-F9 (turning off all overviews and data screens leaving just the game in all its glory on screen) and I just sit and stare for a while at the now very much betterer to me, and also much darkerer and far more realisticier star and nebula filled void in this, the fourth wormhole and the second Class 3 we now call 'home'... and I just sit here, with this silly damn grin on my face.

Now if I could just remember where I put my towel...  =]

Noobs Just Don’t Know How to Throw a Fit…

~or “Lessons Learned for Noobs continued”

"The time has come,” said The Bittervet,
To talk of many things:
Of Fits--and Ships--and Implant sets--
Of Brokers Fees--and Bling--
And why your ship is burning down--
And whether noobs have wings."

I have been having a right ‘ol fun time of it these past few days… I got my Venture where I want her for my skills. 2x Hobgoblin Is for defense, in the highs x2 Miner Is and a Salvager I and in the Mids, a Sm. Subordinate Screen Stabilizer I, Sm. CL-5 Emergency Shield Overload I Booster and a Limited 1MN Afterburner I, in the Low a Damage Control I and she is rigged with a Sm. Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer, a Sm. Anti-Thermal Screen Reinforcer I and a Sm. Core Defense Field Extender.

She tanks the Rats w/o having to use the shield booster, that’s mainly there to buff up the shield after a rat fight and JIC, for any potential Player Interactions. The Hobgobs make short work of the rats in the backwater .5 that is Ossogur, and the salvager lets me profit from their loss…  =]

As for mining, in an Anon comment made in “Blingin’ th Burst” I said I was mining Golden Omber as it was the most profitable ore here. Anon said according to the chart I was using, I should be mining Kernite or Plag. And he was basically right, Kernite is more valuable per unit than all the Ombers… but you have to be in Amarr space and I dun’t like Amarr space… so meh.

As for what to mine, I did a RW test… and the results are below. All forms of Plagioclase are the most lucrative giving you over 1m ISK per trip, or 2m ISK an hour. Add to that the highly variable Rat Loot & Salvage, from over 1m ISK to… well, ‘0’, and this is at least a start on buying the basic books etc. one needs in those early weeks. And please gentle reader, keep in mind my char is not even 2 weeks old and has NO HELP ingame, ok?

OK, so while I was I getting my Venture squared away I had refit the Burst for pure ratting and for those occasions when I just felt like shootzing shit what moves a bit instead of rocks. I recently got skilled into some rigs I wanted and while in Rens I noticed that I could fly a Firetail… Now the Firetail frigate has a special place in my soul… for many the Rifter is/was considered the quintessential fighter frigate, but for me it has always been the Firetail.

“What a piece of work is a Firetail! How noble in design, how infinite in fitting ! In style and flight how express and admirable! In action how like an Angel of Death!”

Now Tur (the other Tur, my older brother), has one he’s had for like YEARS… and he’s never really used it… kinda like owning a collector car you never drive ya know? So I bought one and got her fitted up nicely for Rats and I have used her more in the last 2 days than ol’ Tur has used his in over 3 years!

Now while I have been going through this Dropout Noob Test I have tried to catch myself doing things based on my 4 years of experience in EVE, things a noob would not have a clue about… and I turns out fitting was one of those things. I am not anything like Ripard Teg or even my good friend Sov when it comes to fitting and the understanding of how all the various modules not only work but work together… the gestalt of a fit, how the sum of the parts makes a ship intrinsically better or worse for a given situation. Why and how some hulls, with their base Grid, CPU and role bonuses are great with ‘this’ fit and suck with ‘this’ other one.

But I have learned how to recognize a good fit when I see it and where to find good fits to work from. And ALL of my time working on my skills and skill queue, has been spent on getting the correct modules skilled up, not the ‘next’ hull… And this is different from when I was a noob. Back then my ONLY focus was on getting out of Frigates and into a Destroyer… all that other ‘stuff’ would come later. And it showed in the fits I tried to fly and fight with. And All my noob friends were the same way… the goal was not to fly WELL, it was to get a BIGGER ship… and in EVE, that aint how things work.

But this time, without thinking about it consciously, I knew I had to get the right skills for the MODS down first… get into better mods, guns, webs, shield mods… and RIGS! When I was new I didn’t even start to consider the importance of rigs until I had it rather pointedly pointed out to me. Oh, and Implants! I actually intentionally ignored implants when I was a noob… kept hearing how incredibly expensive they were and how bad it sucked to get podded with a head full if ‘spensive gear… “Eff that!” I thought, what a stupid idea… spending your hard earned ISK in the multi-millions for a few silly things that only make your killers howl with laughter when you DIAF… “Not throwing my ISK away on that stuff!” said I. Huh.

Until I learned how much they affect your SKILLING time… then I started learning about them and that not all implants are billions, or even in the millions… and that a basic set can cut hours off a long queue. This time I got a basic cheap full set as soon as I could… and it cut hours off my skill time… Noobs who are here on their own have no way to know about this… and I do not remember the tutorials I went through saying anything about implants… or the real importance of fitting and skilling into good fits, not just the next hull in the tree.

How I remember when I was a newbie about how ALL I wanted was get into that next hull… Then I’d be badass! Then I’d be pwning the rats and able to PvP!! So like everyone else I concentrated on the ship ladder…  Frig to Dessie to Cruiser to Battle Cruiser to BattleSHIP! And then on to the T2’s and the Faction hulls!! I also remember when I finally, proudly got into each new hull that I always had a helluva time fitting them. All T1, meta 4 or even meta 1 mods… even 200mm AC’s onna ‘Cane FFS. Why? Because like everyone else I thought the SHIP was the “thing”… and it’s not. The FIT is the “thing”, the ‘ship’ is just what you carry the Fit on… The Fit is what DOES everything, the ship is just a rack to hang it on.

And that was what led to this post. Ships need Fits, Fits needs Skills for Fitting, Skills need Implants to reduce Skilling time. Teaching our noobs the true importance of Ship Fitting, is as far as I can see, completely lacking in the tutorials. And I see it everyday in Rookie Help chan. Guys asking all about how to get into the next ship class faster. And I realized that this is the wrong way to go about it. That the importance of learning fitting is the key to everything ship related in EVE.

I’m thinking about going back and running the rest of the tutorials now… with an eye to seeing if I can come up with any ideas on how to teach our noobs what they really need to know… how to FIT the ships you fly, not work your ass off to get into ships you can’t Fly properly.

The Sleepers Have… Awakened?

~or “The Code of the Dark Side Has Been Written… Begun the Research Race has.”

It seems once you get CCP moving, “The moving hand once having coded, codes on …” Having brought the pain to Nullsec in the form of Jump Drive changes, CCP is now doing… something… in my beloved Anoikis. But what?

Let's see…

First we have a News Release by CCP Falcon, “Sisters of EVE Release Sleeper Research Findings.” and then we have another the next day, “Breaking News - Navies Request Capsuleer Assistance.”  Hmmm… Then we have CCP Fozzie putting the Dev touch on it all here, “Anomalous Materials: The Research Race of YC 116.”

Thin reading those are… so, do we have any details? Can we glean anything from this?

(1) There is some new “…unusual behavior among Sleeper Drones in W-Space…” evidentially. Has anyone heard anything? I haven’t and I keep up with my corpmates in the hole, et al. … but I have not seen nor heard anything from them or in the wormhole side of the EVE blogsphere about any unusual Sleeper behavior of late… hmmm…

But this ‘new unusual behavior’ no one is reporting as far as I know, has prompted the Empire Navies to put out a ‘call for help’ from us gods-forsaken-heretical-gate-building-capsuleers… they are requesting, “donations” of our Blue Loot…

”The empire navies are requesting donations of Neural Network Analyzers and Sleeper Data Libraries to help them reverse engineer the code changes that have triggered this novel behavior.”

Donations? As in FREE?? Have they met us??? We dunt kill Sleepers for free man. With no CONCORD bounties or bonuses and fighting the deadliest NPCs in or near New Eden, and having to haul said L&S through multiple deadly wormholes and then through Empire space to a hub… and all we get for all this is the meager ISK we earn from the sale of said Lewts and Slavage that we wrest, at great risk, from the smoking remains of our intractable foes…

Yup, they want us to ‘give’ them our Blue Lewts for some ‘point’ system…
-    Neural Network Analyzer (worth 1 point)
 -   Sleeper Data Library (worth 4 points)

And there are only 4 agents you can contact for this…
Federation Navy – Auvier Bauvon
Caldari Navy – Hikemi Korrado
Republic Fleet – Heder Elislar
Imperial Navy – Ren Karetta

In a quote from The Scope by Federation Admiral Auver Bauvon of Tripwire Intelligence and Command, at the Federation Navy headquarters in Algogille stated:

"The Federation Navy believes that this change in Sleeper activity presents an enormous opportunity for deeper research into their technology, which will hopefully yield more fruitful results than previous avenues of testing.”

“Echoing the sentiments of Admiral Bauvon, Valklear General Heder Elislar of the Republic Fleet also stressed the importance of the change in activity, stating that 'the Republic Fleet and Republic Security Services well be working around the clock with our best engineers and scientists to determine the best course of action to take advantage of this new data. This is very much a case of striking while the iron is hot, and ensuring we gather as much data as possible.” (source)

CCP Fozzie also reveals that,
“…this storyline and the associated donation drive will lead directly to new technology falling into the hands of players in the near future. The relative success of each empire’s donation drive will determine in what order each faction will get access to this new technology.

Each faction navy will also express their gratitude through a special ingame item representing an honorary commission to their forces. The commissions will be given to the character that donates the highest value of Neural Network Analyzers and Sleeper Data Libraries (combined and weighted) to each faction over the course of the event.

Each commission will be a unique item that will forever contain the name of the winning character in the description.”

This is, of course, an Ingame Event, starting 10/7 and running until downtime 10/14… just one week folks… CCP will be tracking and posting results and donation numbers etc. Fozzie wraps up with…

“We’re very happy to be opening up this new way that players can influence the lore and history of EVE, and we can’t wait to take the lid off of the new tech that it will unlock.

This is only the beginning.

- CCP Fozzie”

Say it with me… new tech, new tech, new tech, new tech, new tech!

I have but this to add…

“May you always live in Interesting times.”

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Refinery…

~or “Lessons Learned for Noobs continued…”

An interesting thing happened while mining last night. I was yellow boxed by a Rifter that landed at ‘0’ in the belt. I had about a 90% full cargo bay, was at about 75% on the last mining cycle, I was pre-aligned (but not moving) to the station… so I simply hit ‘warp’ and typed “prick LOL” in local and warped off with a full cargo hold…

Now at the time I didn’t even think about this really, I am a 4 year veteran and this is EVE. But… today I realized that what I did was a veterans response and by that I mean my ‘lack of response’, the whole hit ‘warp’ type ‘prick’ hit ‘enter’ thing was handled by a small part of my mind that was not reading a blog post on the laptop screen… I ‘consciously’ didn’t really notice the incident.

But I realized today that this is not how a noob see this… I remembered the first time I was yellow boxed out of the blue by a player… not in detail, I dunt remember where I was or even what I was doing exactly… Arnon or Soshin I think, inna mission mebbe… but what I do remember very clearly was how I FELT... whatta gut-punch the realization that I was locked up was and how weirdly scared I was all…

WHAT? OH SHEET!!! WHY IS HE LOCKING ME?? am I gonna lose my ship??? am I gonna DIE????

I broke out inna sweat, hands started to shake, I fumbled everything… I do remember I got out and back to dock… and then shook for a while before heading back out.

But he was just doing what so many vets do… griefing a noob. He target locks em, or can flips em or steals from dey wrecks in the hope of pushing them to go all ragey and finally shootz at him… then he killz them easy as pie and LOLs in local as he warp off to the next victim.

But even as a noob I quickly figured out several things… mission greifers and can flippers can usually safely just be ignored. You can either dockup, switch ops to another belt or system or just go on about your business, grab and safeguard what you can of your ore, loot and salvage and accept the loss of income as the ‘price of doing business’. But for him to attack you without provocation simply means he gets CONCORDED… and 99% of ‘em just want easy PvE kills not CONCORD RED on their Killboards.

One thing I used to also do was pop my own wrecks when invaded by a mission griefer… it was fun cause sometimes they’d be the ones to go all ragey in local… silly asses… so,

Lessons Learned #5 – Teach DETAILS about how ganks and scams and such work… give examples and teach safe responses to each…
(1)   If you simply don’t rise to the bait they can’t do shit to you except possibly gank you… but if they do they will get CONCORDED. Real sucide ganks are mostly done for profit, though rarely, but sometimes, just for the lulz…
(2)   Whatever they steal is replaceable and almost never worth the cost of your ship and fit…
(3)   and basically, if you ignore them, they actually usually just go away.

Hell mebbe CCP should make a few missions that recreate classic ganks… we gotta do better at teaching our noobs.

As to why I seemingly ‘ran away’ called ‘im a prick in local and docked up? Like I said I was at 90% cargo capacity and on my last mining cycle… I was heading back to dock inna second anyway… and I dunt like greifers…    =]
