THIS Is What We DO!!!

~or, What Pee-vee-Pee in Eee-vee-Eee Feels Like…

I have finally, after 2 and half years, learned how to control my reactions to PvP in EvE… sorta.

EvE players know all too well the intensity of Player v Player combat in EVE Online… and those who don’t… can’t… not ever. No other game, MMO or otherwise has ever caused as deeply instinctual a reaction in me to virtual combat as flying and dying in the beautiful yet disassociated, third-person, not-even-a-gods-damned-avatar spaceships in EvE.

A noob by the name of Lei Harper wrote a Reddit post on his fourth day on his trial account in EvE about his experiences thus far. If you haven’t read it yet, stop and do so now. It is truly worth the time.

He triggered an avalanche… First off, Lei writes very well. His style is easy and draws you in. His descriptions of action, setting and scenery are clear, concise and touching. He reached deep into the group psyche of EvE players, bitter vets and new players alike and pulled us along with him, especially the older players, to relive again some of the thrill, awe and wonder that we each felt when but a nubbins inna Noobship, flying out into the black, knowing not what was to come, fearful of, and terribly excited by, what little we had heard and learned, and yet fearless in our naiveté.

Do you remember the first time…
You jumped a gate? You landed at a plasma planet? You saw your first mining fleet operation? You saw the Moons of Nibia, the Antares Maelstrom and Perdition's flames… (wait, wrong ‘verse, sorry there…) Do you remember the first time you were targeted? The first time you target locked another ship? was fired on? and fired back? The first time you lost a ship… your first kill? Well, Lei touched that in many of us and the whole thing sorta went viral. The responses to his post were stunning to him to say the least.

He received over 3 billon ISK in player donations (that’s all he’s written about definitely, we can only assume it is a bit more than that when all was said and done) and only he knows how many ships etc. were ‘tracted to him as gifts. He was so moved by the hundreds of comments (469 to date) that he started a blog of his own… Rising Star where Lei has continued to share with us his exploits and adventures in EvE with the same captivating yet easy to read style.

This took me, as it has so many of us, back to my nubbin days... That word, ‘nubbins’ has a special connotation for me… You see the second time I got killed by a player was at a gate camp, but the guy who killed me then convoed me, gave me ISK, a new Rifter and apologized. He said he would not have attacked me if he had only seen how new I was. He didn’t believe in griefing noobs. I was invited to their chat and they were all chill bros, with only a little trolling… but what I remember most was him telling them “Back off guys, he’s only but a nubbins… we all were once.”

"We all were once…" Do you remember how PvP felt back then? How INTENSE it was… how you actually got the shakes so bad you had to let go of the mouse? How you felt overloaded by the sheer amount of information one had to track and the number of things you HAD to do, and in the proper order…

Identify your attacker; is there moar than one? What ship class is it? what is his speed/bearing/transversal & range? based on ship class is he moar likely to be setting up to kite you or is he going to close, tackle and brawl?
Do you have wingman(men); do you have corpmates/fleetmates/Allies on grid/insystem/a few hops out? Do you have your defensive mods ‘on’/offensive mods ready/droans launched/weapons loaded and don’t forget all the sage advice, ‘transversal speed can save you but it can also protect him’; ‘Scram FIRST Web SECOND’; what are the racial resistance holes for his ship class? Dammit what was the name of the ammo for those resists?…

Now, QUICK! based on ALL the above what is your best course of action? What are the strengths and weaknesses of your ship? What’s your best counter against his? Should you kite or tackle and brawl? Should you fly manually or set an orbit distance and concentrate on your defense/offence mods?
…and while you are trying to work your way through all of that… you explode.

At least, that’s how it was for me for like the first year or moar… Then you look back at the game logs… Huh. The logs show you trying to target the sun, the moon, then successfully targeting one of your own drones… you then scrammed one of your own droans... your ships speed was 0.0… and he killed you with 150mm Meta-1 guns… oh dear gods <facepalm>…

I wrote a number of posts on this in my first year… Wish I was James T. and Fighting BACK are two of my favorites. I struggled in vain against the shakes and the data overload. Well… in the time since I have discovered why Fleet fights can be much better for learning PvP than solo. Especially small gang fleets… When you are a member of a fleet, better, a small gang fleet, you are not ALONE. Yes, you can still get primaried and yes, you can still lose your ship but.. you are not going to get primaried EVERYTIME. And helping your bros with, for me, Hero tackle such as paper hull tanked fast dubble bubble Sabres with dual Faction webbers or Heavy ‘dictors like my armor Devoter with da big bubble and an infinity point… and a little extra DPS… is nothing but pure awesumsauce.

My experience in fleets and small gangs has helped me immeasurably in team and solo PvP, not that I have gotten into much of that at all but I have been far easier about the times that I have traversed losec solo on my way to or from an Op. I know if something happens, I am far better prepared and… I find myself hoping someone will be [RED] or [ORANGE] or simply… a Target of Opportunity… I find a small tremor in my hands still marks the possibility of a little player interaction, only now it’s… “An-ti-ci-paa,aa-shun, is making me shake!”

This brings me to the genesis of this post. As is true of most EvE players I am a SciFi buff. I first picked up the reading habit back in ’68 with paperbacks I swiped from my older brother’s bookshelf. I first lost myself in the worlds of the Grey Lensman series by E.E. ‘Doc” Smith and I was hooked. I became an avid reader of everything by Asimov, Clark, Van Vogt, Bradbury, Blish and, of course, R. A. Heinlein among many others. I watched every episode of the original Star Trek on the days they were first aired (and as such when I say I am a trekkie and some snot nosed thirtysomething tries to correct me and tell me, “It’s TrekkER.” I nod and give them all the attention they deserve...)...

I have followed everything SciFi, looking for good writing, characters, scenery, effects and stories. I loved the original Battlestar Galactica, so when BSG was reimagined in ’03 I was thrilled and have loved all the variants that followed, Razor, The Plan, Caprica and I was floored by the webseries Blood & Chrome.

Blood & Chrome follows William “Husker” Adama (that's Admiral Adama to you) as a FOB noob pilot on his first mission. This is an AMAZING piece of work. 10 episodes were released by Syfy on Machinima Prime in March of 2012. This is a failed pilot that went on to be a damn good webseries. The acting and writing is superb and the effects are on par with the whole BSG series.

Now, in it, there is a scene where Adama’s Raptor is jumped by three Cylon fighters. They kill two with weapons then the gun jams, they are out of missiles and Adama pulls off a bold and extremely dangerous piece of flying that saves their asses…

In the aftermath Adama yells out something that has resonated in my bones ever since. It deeply evokes the same intensity of feeling, the rush of battle and the thrill of victory we Empyreans feel when we  win through a good close fight in EvE…

Watch now and see if it reminds you of how PvP in EvE makes you feel..

My Oddyssey Post...

~or, To Journey With The Gods…

OK, I’ma jump on the bandwagon and make me an Odyssey post but… mine is simple, to the point and covers something no one else has (AFAIK)…

You ALL have by now Jumped multiple gates and been variously stunned, awed & amazed… and/or bored, irritated and pissed that you can’t TURN IT OFF. But no matter what your take on it, it is a small Baby Jesus Feature in its own right. It is a sea change in travelling from one star system to another… and IMHO it does tie them together much better than the old Loading Bar.

For me, I found I am ok with them. If you don’t watch every time you jump the transition takes the same amount of time as before, so a net no change and if you do watch, it is visually a vast improvement over a ‘Loading Bar’… I don’t care who you are that is the plain truth. So yea, I like it… it adds no time to my travels and adds Immersion to our 'verse, Kudos CCP…

But, in order for me to take the New Gate Ride I have to leave Bastion first… and that entailed a 3 hop pipe to Lowsec  than put us 4 lows from Hi and a total of 10(ish, don’t remember exactly now) hops from Amarr. Not a bad pipe, not a great pipe, but quiet and so, doable.

I ran my nightly PI. I have not been as anal about my PI as I should and my production chains are suffering for it… but Robos are still getting made daily just not at peak efficiency… (If Mab ever saw my lackluster PI management he’d prolly try to POD me… LOL)

But, I am doing OK, the wallet, while not bursting, is fat enough for any ship losses not covered by SYJ, Robos are still being made and each one is future ISK so I am happy there, and my current Main Project, Tur’s Dual Empire & Anoikis Fleet is on track.

FYI, I am basically making 2 almost mirror fleets, one in Empire and one in Anoikis. My Empire Fleet is geared moar towards Lo and Nullsec roams (Pewage Fleet) and the Anoikis Fleet is geared towards Site Runs, Gas Raids (ISK Support) & Anoikis PvP Fleets.

So, as I said I had completed PI, and I had broke the Amarr HIC skills, so that Devoter sitting in the POS was now ready to be fitted out, which I did... and after that I was contemplating whether to run the pipe for fuel or a fleet addition when it occurred to me not once had I heard one damn thing about wormhole transitions… The Gates got the love, did my beloved wormholes?

I decided as I had done a half month of fuel runs a few nights ago I would shuttle down the pipe to get a new ship and see what I would see…

And see I did. First, I had spent no time checking out the changes to Dscan while in Bas as I was facefirst in the PI screens and then in PYFA and multiple screens... Ship Fitting/Cargo Bay/Hangar Bay/etc. … I get the Devoter done to my satisfaction, run a quick sea trial, christen and park her, jump inna shuttle and I’m off to the static.

Now I get my first real look at the Dscan changes… Huh… Ummm… well…. OK. It’s… ok. It is a big change from what I have grown comfortable and used to, but it does have its allure. Then, during the warp to the Static I see why I do like it. Immersion.

You see while so much more info is up on screen it is in real time and reflects your changing location insystem as you fly from place to place. OK, now that I do like… it’s like when CCP aligned the Gates and rebuilt the whole damn sky so as you moved gate to gate your references in the sky were correct… you felt as though you really were travelling as the scenery changed in relation to your travel. Now, with the new Dscan Returns on screen we have the same Immersion insystem. Yes, I like.

OK, I land on the hole… and jump… D A M N.

Not ONLY is it New & Improved but… it is NOT a Gate Fire jump down that long, dark, nimbus & lightning walled tunnel… OH NOE!!!!  It is, IMHO, FAR FAR better!!

Don’t believe me? See for yourself…

As you can see we aren’t ‘thrown’ billions of kilometers and thousands or millions of lightyears from gate to gate like a Templar Pro Baseball players implant and biomech enhanced ‘burn-the-cover-off-the-ball’ pitch… oh no… we transition gracefully, in an almost godlike transcendence from one realm of Einsteinian 3-space to the next… so beautiful… so very beautiful…

Gate jumping is a forceful transition through hyperspace, powerful and scary (and fun!)…
Wormhole jumping… is akin to travelling with the Gods…

Thank you CCP. I, a mere immortal, your most humble and unworthy scribe… withdraw all complaints.

POD Locked...

~or, The Good Sport…

“A funny thing happened on the way home…” which is what I am sure a particular Empyrean told his corpmates this past weekend. You see this guy was a good pretty sport about a very bad decision.

And FYI, this posts name has a very particular meaning for me... and it does not mean, "the POD is target locked"... No, it is named for a particular method of Hisec Wardec Griefing for Ransom and Fun that a good friend of ours used to use back in the heyday of Hisec OMC (One Man Corp) wardeccing...

POD Locking is where, after you destroy a target vessel and you get a lock & scram & dual web on the POD... you don't kill him. You just hold him there... forever... seriously, until downtime at the least and if you're on the ball, you can catch him at uptime and extend the POD Lock a whole 'nother day... It's just plain cruel...  =]

This eventually ends when the target decides either to pay the ransom or self assplode... It can be quite a riot (for the locker, not the lockee) and a major cause of some truly facinating local banter (from the lockee)... It also produced some very nice ransoms too... So 'POD Locked' has a bit deeper meaning that just "I have him!"... but I digress...

So, we had the “Holy Rollers Fleet” up…
A Scanner (a ‘Master of Probing’ until Odyssey drops, then any ol toon will do... meh) ;
One or two cloaky Scouts;
Orcas, Fat Ass One & Fat Ass Two (or Orca/BS/BS);
And the Deal Closer, one of our Moros pilots…
Plus the usual tag alongs, them as are hoping for pew pew or a Hisec hole or just bored and it’s something to do…

Anyhoo, we had fleet up and I, being more of a pew pew guy nowadays, was in one of my Sabres, you know, JIC. But this one was slightly refit for just Rolling Ops… My usual is a Dubble Bubble Cloaky Sabre, but Rolling Ops are usually a bit of a snorefest for those as flying CAP (Combat Air Patrol, IE Security) so I refit for a little fun… I dropped one Bubbler for a Festival launcher loaded with Snoballz with which I harass and generally make a pest of myself to my corpmates and allies.

So I am in my Rolling Sabre JIC something interesting pops up… and it did. The Op was going as usual when alla sudden there was an Anathema uncloaking OUTSIDE of jump range of the hole… WTF??? He was burning to the hole THROUGH our fleet… LOL we were ALL over it… It was like whacking a hornets’ nest!

And my Rolling Sabre is also dual Sebo fit, so she’s a POD Killer… I tapped the MWD, turned and burned towards him while hitting the bubbler then I hit my Fed Navy webber and tapped his icon. I had him locked and webbed afore the bubble was fully inflated… disengaged MWD and started the music of my 200mm AC II's on him... the Anathema assploded and the POD was left rocking in the smoke and debris of his little ship, trapped in my bubble.

The FC was calling “Hold Fire! Hold Fire! Don't shoot the POD, points and webs ONLY!” so we could all whore the POD kill. So I hit him with my webber, orbited at 500m and kept the bubbles coming one a minute every minute... then I hit F4, the Snoballer of Deth...  =]

Everyone saw I was smackin him with Snoballz and shortly thereafter he started getting hit by every firework CCP has produced…  LOL!

We had like 5 or more webs on him, I kept popping bubbles 500m from him no matter where tried to go at his measly 15m/s and all the while he is being orbited by ALL of us and he is being hit by 'Focus Fire Fireworks'… Then the Moros pilot starts trying to kill him for real… ZOMG!

During all of this there was, as you might imagine, a somewhat interesting convo going on in local…

Draconic Slayer > WAIT
Pell Helix > sup
Draconic Slayer > bby
Pell Helix > ?
Draconic Slayer > pls, we're trying to help Red Circle
Draconic Slayer > I just want to get out, lol
Pell Helix > Well there’s really only the one way out right now, haha.
Draconic Slayer > THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT
Draconic Slayer > lol
Pell Helix > ?
Draconic Slayer > well, I meant like getting out with my pod
Pell Helix > Slaves or something better?
Draconic Slayer > No, not really
Pell Helix > Well we're not really looking for an exit right now.
Draconic Slayer > It's just some fitting/hardwiring
Draconic Slayer > :(
Draconic Slayer > I thought we had something, something special
Pell Helix > If you'd like to pay some ransom we'd be more than happy to throw you through the next hole.
Draconic Slayer > well, assuming I could have an exit, sure ^.^
Pell Helix > Wait, did you just jump in through the hole we closed?
Draconic Slayer > Yeah, lol
Pell Helix > didn't see the Moros? lol
Draconic Slayer > I was going back since were planning to roll the hole
Draconic Slayer > no, I didn't
Pell Helix > He is ninja Moros
Draconic Slayer > Jumped when it went half mass
Draconic Slayer > I was planning to go back and roll the hole, but I just had to check this one last hole I scanned...
Draconic Slayer > oh god

Pell Helix > yeah I saw your probes when I hopped in, fast scan.
Draconic Slayer > Well, could you be a pal and give me an entrance??
Pell Helix > Billion ISK and we give you the convenient K-space.
Draconic Slayer > ?*
Draconic Slayer > wat, my pod isn't that much
Pell Helix > (Doesn't involve podding you)
Draconic Slayer > bbypls
Pell Helix > ?
Draconic Slayer > I thought we were butt buddies
Draconic Slayer > m8, this isn't what butt buddies do

(Some “ya-da ya-da” about  Red Circle and Razor…)

Draconic Slayer > I really feel like you should give me an entrance
Draconic Slayer > or, exit that doesn't involve my pod being destroyed here
Pell Helix > Oh we have a K-space I'm willing to give you
Pell Helix > Direct in baby
Pell Helix > But these guys won't stop pointing you for free, even if I'm getting bored.
Draconic Slayer > I can offer my ass
Draconic Slayer > it's very tight, as far as I know  (<- WTF!?!?!  LOL)
Draconic Slayer > but like
Draconic Slayer > Kspace bruh
Pell Helix > K-space! da!
Draconic Slayer > well
Draconic Slayer > sort of, I guess
Draconic Slayer > welp
Draconic Slayer > thanks for the fish

He stops his POD, 0.0ms… the Moros still can’t hit him…

Draconic Slayer > ok, come on
Draconic Slayer > I'm not even moving anymore
Draconic Slayer > can you guys give him tracking links or something
Draconic Slayer > or use paints
Draconic Slayer > MOAR PAINTS

And moar paints seem to do the trick…  [POP!]

And the obligatory Film At 11…

Objects in Space...

~or, Asleep at the CON…

OK, so last night we had run all the sites in Bas and I’m doing PI when the scouts rolling the hole find an offline Faction POS w/ some faction mods etc. inna hole with an active yet unmanned T1 POS… cool. We gonna bash and grab the mods… only, I am so tired I am having serious trouble keeping my eyes open just for PI… I had already decided to wrap up and hit the hay but ISK is ISK and I need ISK… so I reship to my new fav ship class, the ‘dictors, HICs & Fast… in this case a dubble bubble cloaky Sabre.

The dubble bubble cloaky Sabre is great in holes… ‘dictor bubbles have 2 minute timers so you carry like 50 or more in your hold and if you pop one every minute to 45 seconds you can dubble bubble a hole or a fight forever. Plus the cloak allows you to operate inside a hostile or raid hole and they are FAST… but made of paper.

However I love me my hero Sabres… So we are working out a comp and finally decide we are not getting a fight, just a bash so I reship to my new Oracle and warp out to the static and thence to the bash fleet… hit F1 and…

When I woke up, I was here…

Yea… I said ‘when I woke up’…  I fell asleep like I was drugged right after hitting F1. I woke several hours later… assessed my situation, asked if the static was still there, it was not, they had rolled it after the Op…  oh frak me.

So, I made safes, logged and crashed for real. This AM woke and am now sitting off Dscan from anything hoping one of our scouts from last night still has the BMs for this system as they had found the static out… and I put up a 100 mISK finders fee if anyone can get me a warpin to a safe hole leading outta here… and Obi-Wan, that is my only hope aside from self assploding my Oracle and my fully 'planted POD… sheesh.

Some days are just so full of fail you wonder how you can keep loggin on...

================================================

UPDATE:
My Alliance CEO logged on, read the mail and told me to get an alt over to his POS for the Null and the Lowsec BMs out of that hole.

I did, and Tur warped out to Empire a while ago... =]

I LOVE this game!
