My Oddyssey Post...

~or, To Journey With The Gods…

OK, I’ma jump on the bandwagon and make me an Odyssey post but… mine is simple, to the point and covers something no one else has (AFAIK)…

You ALL have by now Jumped multiple gates and been variously stunned, awed & amazed… and/or bored, irritated and pissed that you can’t TURN IT OFF. But no matter what your take on it, it is a small Baby Jesus Feature in its own right. It is a sea change in travelling from one star system to another… and IMHO it does tie them together much better than the old Loading Bar.

For me, I found I am ok with them. If you don’t watch every time you jump the transition takes the same amount of time as before, so a net no change and if you do watch, it is visually a vast improvement over a ‘Loading Bar’… I don’t care who you are that is the plain truth. So yea, I like it… it adds no time to my travels and adds Immersion to our 'verse, Kudos CCP…

But, in order for me to take the New Gate Ride I have to leave Bastion first… and that entailed a 3 hop pipe to Lowsec  than put us 4 lows from Hi and a total of 10(ish, don’t remember exactly now) hops from Amarr. Not a bad pipe, not a great pipe, but quiet and so, doable.

I ran my nightly PI. I have not been as anal about my PI as I should and my production chains are suffering for it… but Robos are still getting made daily just not at peak efficiency… (If Mab ever saw my lackluster PI management he’d prolly try to POD me… LOL)

But, I am doing OK, the wallet, while not bursting, is fat enough for any ship losses not covered by SYJ, Robos are still being made and each one is future ISK so I am happy there, and my current Main Project, Tur’s Dual Empire & Anoikis Fleet is on track.

FYI, I am basically making 2 almost mirror fleets, one in Empire and one in Anoikis. My Empire Fleet is geared moar towards Lo and Nullsec roams (Pewage Fleet) and the Anoikis Fleet is geared towards Site Runs, Gas Raids (ISK Support) & Anoikis PvP Fleets.

So, as I said I had completed PI, and I had broke the Amarr HIC skills, so that Devoter sitting in the POS was now ready to be fitted out, which I did... and after that I was contemplating whether to run the pipe for fuel or a fleet addition when it occurred to me not once had I heard one damn thing about wormhole transitions… The Gates got the love, did my beloved wormholes?

I decided as I had done a half month of fuel runs a few nights ago I would shuttle down the pipe to get a new ship and see what I would see…

And see I did. First, I had spent no time checking out the changes to Dscan while in Bas as I was facefirst in the PI screens and then in PYFA and multiple screens... Ship Fitting/Cargo Bay/Hangar Bay/etc. … I get the Devoter done to my satisfaction, run a quick sea trial, christen and park her, jump inna shuttle and I’m off to the static.

Now I get my first real look at the Dscan changes… Huh… Ummm… well…. OK. It’s… ok. It is a big change from what I have grown comfortable and used to, but it does have its allure. Then, during the warp to the Static I see why I do like it. Immersion.

You see while so much more info is up on screen it is in real time and reflects your changing location insystem as you fly from place to place. OK, now that I do like… it’s like when CCP aligned the Gates and rebuilt the whole damn sky so as you moved gate to gate your references in the sky were correct… you felt as though you really were travelling as the scenery changed in relation to your travel. Now, with the new Dscan Returns on screen we have the same Immersion insystem. Yes, I like.

OK, I land on the hole… and jump… D A M N.

Not ONLY is it New & Improved but… it is NOT a Gate Fire jump down that long, dark, nimbus & lightning walled tunnel… OH NOE!!!!  It is, IMHO, FAR FAR better!!

Don’t believe me? See for yourself…

As you can see we aren’t ‘thrown’ billions of kilometers and thousands or millions of lightyears from gate to gate like a Templar Pro Baseball players implant and biomech enhanced ‘burn-the-cover-off-the-ball’ pitch… oh no… we transition gracefully, in an almost godlike transcendence from one realm of Einsteinian 3-space to the next… so beautiful… so very beautiful…

Gate jumping is a forceful transition through hyperspace, powerful and scary (and fun!)…
Wormhole jumping… is akin to travelling with the Gods…

Thank you CCP. I, a mere immortal, your most humble and unworthy scribe… withdraw all complaints.

Fly Safe and see you in the Sky  =/|)=

  1. Oh man, you should see how bad my PI lines are at the moment. For awhile, while we moved Aunt Sue in, they got pretty much total neglect. Then I started reconfiguring from pure robotics to POS fuel components. And then there is everything else going on - sites, ops, etc. For the first time I am considering a weekly schedule rather than a daily schedule. We'll see.

But hey, you forgot to mention one thing about the new WH graphics. When you click jump, it's like the hole reaches out and grabs you to suck you in. It's startling at first, but you get pulled in just like at a gate but without all the noise and light show. THAT is way cool too.

  2. LOL, Mab... my dear friend... I had truly believed you would not 'really' change your gameplay, even in Anoikis... I was grinning from ear to ear last night when you were the first to heed the Merc Op CTA, ship up, Fleet up and join in the Op with a will. =]

As re the jump animations... I was so in awe of how visionary the two different animations were... one for a mechanically created artificial wormhole with it's attendant 'forced' feeling against the dreamy easy feel of how naturally (lol) occurring holes sorta slide you from space to space that I totally missed the details...

Watch carefully and you will see that your viewpoint is, same as gates, turned and aligned towards your destination and then sucked in and you travel along a straight tunnel... but this one is all smooth and like falling through a water tunnel.

In 'natural' (lol) holes, as we all know you can 'see' the space into which they lead... so we glide through the hole we land, softly, facing the view of the space we see, albeit distorted and all wavylike through the, dare I use the analogy? Looking Glass?

I will forevermore wonder if, or when, I might one clear EvEning see... a White Rabbit and a little blond girl as I land gently... on the other side of the sky.

  3. I'm gonna comment on my own post here...

You see I have been flying in Odyssey a bit longer now, as we all have and my original reactions are, like the first blush of that first kiss, starting to wear off...

My friend Scientist, over at "A Scientist's Life in Eve" did a post called "It’s the little things you miss" (http://eveblog.allumis.co.uk/?p=1302)... It is about some of the impacts that Odyssey has wrought on Industry...

That and a response I wrote to Jester's "Enjoy the Odyssey" post (http://jestertrek.blogspot.com/2013/06/enjoy-odyssey_11.html), made me rethink my original reaction to, and feelings about, the changes Odyssey has brought to the System Scanner...

Ima copy my comment from Scientists post as I can't really say it better...

    =============================================

    Little things I miss...

I miss the fear, pressure and risk involved in the possibility of not recalling my probes in time…

I also miss the immediacy and the need to keep your head in the game that imminent probe loss forced on us… you looked away from your screen on pain of death… now you can watch whole episodes of Mad Men and your probes just take care of themselves…

I miss the trepidation, pressure and risk inherent in needing to be decloaked long enough to launch all 7 probes…

I miss working out the best probe configuration on my own… not having one that is ‘meh’ good enough so that I no longer ‘waste’ time setting up my own patterns… and I fear for our poor noobs, who will believe that the one insta-launch 8 probe configuration is the BESTEST configuration ’cause CCP wouldn’t have put it in there if it wasn’t… right?

I miss launching just the number of probes “I” want to launch, and no more.

...but most of all, I miss undocking, loggin on or jumping a gate or a hole into a deep black forbidding mysterious sky… and NOT immediately KNOWING EVERYTHING around me without trying...

    I miss exploring...

Strange to feel this way after an ‘exploration’ based expansion drops huh?
